Fuel-monitoring (without Capex!)
Published date: 15/09/2020

From our research, it shows that over 90% of the ships have no monitoring system in place, other than noon-reporting. Although valuable, these reports will not help you in deciding how to reduce fuel consumption.

For example, from the collected noon-data, you cannot conclude if a vessel is sailing efficiënt or not. You can see higher or lower fuel consumption than average, but cannot check the reason for it. Bad weather? Strong currents? High vessel speed? You only have one data point every 24 hours.

So, to take a next step, you will need a more advanced monitoring system.

But monitoring systems come at high cost, mainly for purchasing and installing sensors, flow meters, pulling cables etc. Also the vessel has off-hire, and you are faced with fees from maritime service suppliers that install the equipment. Not to mention the challenges of visiting a vessel due to COVID-19.

Coming from the maritime industry, we decided to take a radical new approach. Using Big Data, and our unique, in-house developed Digital Twin concept, we have developed a new way of monitoring ships. Using no new hardware onboard, we can monitor any conventionally powered ship on fuel efficiency with over 95% accuracy without sensors on-board.

The past years, we have tested and validated our predictions with actual measurements. For conventional powered ships, we have seen a staggering 95 to 98% accuracy.

Using the data, we can see where improvements can be made. Did you know that over 95% of our monitored vessels is not sailing as designed? All of them sail at lower speeds than design speeds, all of them have lower engine loads than 80% of MCR, where they are tuned at.

We use the collected data, to propose measures that save fuel. For example, tweaking the pitch settings of your CPP to match the actual vessel speed, not the design speed. In monitoring projects with other clients, we have saved up to 5 to 10% in fuel costs by improving vessel efficiency. Also, based on their data, we have used our Digital Twin technology to calculate the effects of new technologies, based on their own data and historic sailing profiles. It helps our clients to optimize bunker consumption and save costs and emissions.

The advantages of of “Monitoring 4.0” are clear:

  • No need for hardware / sensors on board, so no upfront CAPEX investments
  • No off-hire when installing the system
  • Any vessel online within 24 hours
  • Full reporting on KPI’s that matter to you
  • Weather-corrected fuel consumption data: we correct your data for weather effects, showing “real” fuel consumption
  • We include weather, water depth, currents, wind, sea state, wave height and -directions in our analysis with up to 480 datapoints per day
  • Daily growing database on all vessel movements, for future analysis of your vessel performance

After validation testing on over 100 vessels, we’re confident that the Digital Twin technology is mature, and are inviting innovative charterers and shipowners to run pilots. For a few months, we will track your ships and report on them. No long term committments, and we can start monitoring & reporting in less than 24 hours.

The only thing we need from you is a daily copy of your noon-reports, to let you see what real-time monitoring 4.0 looks like.
